Zoológico de Brasília, Wildlife conservation center in Brasília, Brazil
The Brasília Zoo spans a large area housing over 800 animals from hundreds of bird species and other wildlife. The grounds also feature a Natural Sciences Museum, a butterfly garden, artificial lakes, and various facilities for visitors.
Founded in 1957 as a Zoo-Botanical Park, it came into existence three years before Brasília was officially inaugurated as the capital. This early creation made it a pioneering conservation project for the newly established city.
The zoo is named after a sergeant who died protecting visitors during a dangerous incident in 1977. This naming reflects how the place honors those who served there.
Plan to visit during the day when animals are more active and visibility is better. Wear comfortable shoes since the grounds are large and require significant walking.
The zoo also manages the Riacho Fundo Wildlife Sanctuary, a large area dedicated to regional conservation efforts. This additional space demonstrates the facility's broader commitment to preserving local ecosystems.
