Pondoland Marine Protected Area, Marine protected area along Wild Coast, Eastern Cape, South Africa.
Pondoland Marine Protected Area is a conservation zone stretching 90 kilometers along the Wild Coast from Mzamba River to Umzimvubu River, extending up to 10 kilometers into the ocean. The seabed drops to depths reaching 1000 meters, supporting diverse marine habitats and species.
The South African government established this marine reserve in 2004 by combining it with the former Mkambati protected area to create one comprehensive conservation zone. This merger expanded protection across the entire region.
The marine reserve takes its name from the Pondo people, whose traditional fishing practices and connection to these waters remain part of local life today.
Access to the area comes through designated entry points along the coast, with the best water conditions for activities like diving occurring between May and June. These months offer improved visibility for exploring the marine environment.
At Waterfall Bluff, freshwater cascades drop 100 meters straight down from coastal cliffs directly into the Indian Ocean. This natural wonder shows how rivers can flow directly into the sea without forming a traditional delta.
