Cradle of Humankind, Paleontological museum in Mogale City, South Africa

The limestone caves within the 47,000-hectare site contain numerous fossil chambers connected through a network of underground passages and lakes.

Scientists discovered the 2.3-million-year-old Australopithecus africanus fossil, named Mrs Ples, in the Sterkfontein Caves during 1947 excavations.

The Maropeng Visitor Centre presents exhibits about human evolution through interactive displays, scientific artifacts, and educational programs for international researchers.

Guided tours of the caves depart multiple times daily, allowing visitors to explore the excavation sites while learning about paleontological discoveries.

The Rising Star Cave system yielded 1,200 specimens of Homo naledi in 2013, suggesting this early human species performed intentional body disposal.
