Mapesu Private Game Reserve, Protected area in northern Limpopo, South Africa.
Mapesu is a protected area in northern Limpopo covering about 7,200 hectares with dry watercourses, low hills, and rocky terrain. The landscape is dominated by mopane woodland and supports diverse wildlife across its varied topography.
The reserve was established in 2014 and shares a direct border with Mapungubwe National Park to its north, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This neighboring relationship links the two protected areas into a connected conservation zone.
The reserve allows visitors to take part in wildlife observation and conservation activities that show how local ecosystems are protected in practice. Through these experiences, guests gain direct insight into the ongoing work needed to maintain the landscape and its animals.
The reserve provides accommodation ranging from luxury lodges to self-catering units and camping with tent rental options. Visitors should prepare for warm days and cool nights in this dry region and plan wildlife viewing for early morning or late afternoon when animals are most active.
The reserve became part of an Endangered Wildlife Trust project in 2017 focused on cheetahs and their population needs. Future plans include reintroducing African wild dogs to expand the range of predators in the landscape.
