Mutare, Administrative center in eastern Zimbabwe
Mutare is a major administrative center in eastern Zimbabwe situated at an elevation of around 1,120 meters (3,675 feet) and surrounded by mountain ranges. The city spreads across multiple districts connected by paved roads and unpaved paths that form its internal network.
The settlement started as a military fort in 1897 and grew significantly with railway construction connecting it to Bulawayo and Mozambique's port of Beira. These transportation links transformed it into a key trading and communication hub for the region.
The local museum displays traditional Shona crafts and artistic works that reflect the region's heritage. Walking through its galleries, you see how local people have expressed their creativity and identity through everyday objects and art.
The city sits near the Mozambique border and is easy to explore on foot, especially in central areas where main sites are close together. Visit during cooler months when temperatures are more comfortable for walking around.
An art gallery in the city displays regional collections in a building with views of surrounding valleys and hills. Nearby, visitors can see ancient rock paintings and Iron Age settlement remains at a local hilltop site.
