Kungoni, Cultural center in Mua, Malawi
Kungoni is a cultural center in Mua that combines art galleries, woodcarving workshops, a research center, and a botanical garden in central Malawi. The facility brings together different spaces where visitors can see traditional crafts being made, explore collections, and walk through cultivated plant areas.
The center was established in 1976 to train local carvers and support community economic growth. From its start, it connected traditional craft skills with practical business opportunities.
The Chamare Museum inside displays masks and objects from Chewa, Ngoni, and Yao communities, showing how these groups express their traditions through craft and design. Visitors can observe how these artworks reflect the values and stories important to local people.
The center is accessible and maintains regular hours, allowing visitors to watch carvers working on their pieces. Finished artworks are available to purchase directly, and visitors can speak with the craftspeople about their techniques and methods.
A women's jewelry and accessory program here teaches local artisans new craft skills while creating additional income streams. The research center also preserves tribal photographs and cultural materials that might otherwise be forgotten.
