Pembela Tanah Air Museum, Military museum in central Bogor, Indonesia
The Pembela Tanah Air Museum is a military museum in Bogor that displays weapons, documents, and objects from the Indonesian independence war. It occupies a building from the 18th century on Jalan Jenderal Sudirman in the Sempur area.
The building was constructed in the 18th century during the British colonial period and later served as a military training facility under Japanese occupation. After independence, it was repurposed and opened as a memorial museum in 1995.
The museum takes its name from a volunteer militia formed during the Japanese occupation to train Indonesian fighters. Visitors can see the personal objects left behind by these men, from handwritten letters to worn uniforms.
The museum sits in central Bogor and is easy to reach on foot or by public transport. A visit pairs well with a walk through the surrounding streets, where restaurants and accommodation are also close by.
The building's European facade dates from the colonial era and stands in clear contrast to the interior exhibition rooms, which feature Indonesian design elements. This contrast is itself part of the story the museum tells.
