Sempor Dam, Embankment dam in Kebumen, Indonesia
Sempor Dam is an embankment dam on the Sempor River in the Kebumen district of Central Java, Indonesia. It holds back a reservoir used for irrigating farmland and generating electricity, with the dam body built from compacted earth and rock.
Construction began in 1967 but was halted when a major flood destroyed the structure while it was still being built. The dam was eventually completed in 1978, with the power station coming online 2 years after that.
On weekends, families from nearby towns come to fish or picnic along the water's edge. The open water and the surrounding hills draw a steady flow of day visitors who treat the area as a natural resting spot.
A visit during the dry season is easier, as water levels are more stable and the structure is fully visible from the surrounding paths. Footwear with a good grip is helpful, since some tracks near the dam can be uneven.
The flood that struck during construction forced engineers to redesign key parts of the dam from scratch, which means the structure that stands today differs noticeably from the original drawings. This makes it one of the few dams in Indonesia rebuilt after a failure mid-construction.
