Wayang Kekayon Museum, Traditional puppet theater museum in Bantul, Indonesia
Wayang Kekayon Museum is a puppet theater museum in Bantul with seven different exhibition areas. Each area displays different puppet types made from leather, wood, cloth, and paper from various regions.
The museum was founded in 1990 by Professor Soejono Prawirohadikusumo from Gadjah Mada University. The collection holds puppet artifacts spanning from the 6th to 20th centuries.
The displays show different puppet styles that each carry distinct stories and meanings within the local tradition. Visitors can see how each style plays its own role in how people use puppets to tell important tales.
The museum is located about eight kilometers from Yogyakarta center and is easily accessible by public transportation or taxi. Visitors should plan for one to two hours to walk through the displays comfortably.
A special section links puppet artistry with astrological signs, helping visitors find folklore characters that match their birth zodiac. This unusual blend shows how traditional art can connect with personal meanings for people.
