Diponegoro University is a public higher education institution in the Tembalang district of Semarang, operating several campuses across the city. The main campus sits at 206 meters (676 feet) elevation and hosts faculties for engineering, sciences, medicine, law, and economics.
The institution opened in 1957 as Semarang University through the initiative of MR. Imam Bardjo. A presidential decree in 1960 renamed it after Javanese prince Diponegoro.
The Javanese motto translates as "Education and Guarding the Gateway of the Nation" and reflects the institution's commitment to national development through learning.
