Gunung Welirang, Active volcano in East Java, Indonesia
Gunung Welirang is an active volcano in East Java whose slopes hold two sulfur fields and rise to 3,156 meters within the Arjuno-Welirang volcanic complex. These features shape the mountain's appearance and the surrounding landscape.
The mountain showed its volcanic nature with an eruption from Kawah Plupuh on the northwestern side in August 1952. This was key evidence of ongoing geological activity in the region.
The name comes from the Indonesian word for sulfur, reflecting how the mountain has long served as a mining site since colonial times.
Three main hiking routes reach the summit: Tretes, Cangar, and Purwosari, with Tretes being the easiest path. The best time to hike is during dry season when conditions are more stable and safer.
The Space Shuttle captured images of steam plumes rising from the summit in 1991, confirming ongoing volcanic activity. These satellite photos showed the mountain's activity was visible even from space.
