Tjilik Riwut Airport, airport in Palangkaraya, Indonesia
Tjilik Riwut Airport is the main airport serving Palangkaraya and Central Kalimantan. It has one runway approximately 2600 meters long and a modern terminal building completed in 2019 with three jetbridges, shops, restaurants, and comfortable seating areas for passengers.
The airport opened in 1958 as Panarung Airfield, initially serving only small aircraft on short routes. Over time it expanded to accommodate larger planes and today connects major Indonesian cities with remote areas deep within Kalimantan.
The airport is named after Tjilik Riwut, a respected local leader who fought for Indonesian independence and served as a governor of the region. It stands as a symbol of community pride and connection between Palangkaraya and the wider nation.
The airport is located about 4.5 kilometers east of Palangkaraya's city center and is easily reached by taxi, motorcycle taxi, or shared van. Plan for about 15 minutes travel time to reach the city, and arrive several hours before your flight, especially during busy travel periods.
The airport hosts the Angkasa Aviation Academy, a pilot training school run by Lion Air Group that operates from this location. This school trains pilots and aircraft maintenance technicians, making the airport a significant center for aviation education in Kalimantan.
