Lake Bennett, reservoir in Australia
Lake Bennett is an artificial reservoir in the Northern Territory, located around 80 kilometers south of Darwin. The dam creates a freshwater lake surrounded by hills, with grassy banks for swimming and paddling, plus accommodation and facilities available at the De Lago Resort.
The lake was created in 1980 when George and Ken Bennett built a dam on their property to supply water. Later, the area developed into a tourist destination with a resort opening in the 1990s, which closed for renovation in 2018 and reopened in 2021 as the De Lago Resort.
The lake is accessible via a marked turnoff on the Stuart Highway, followed by a sealed road leading to the resort. Visitors can enjoy a 2.5-kilometer bushwalk, swimming, canoeing, fishing, or mini-golf, with equipment available for rent on site.
The lake was originally built as a private water source but has become a popular weekend escape, with many visitors unaware that the water was initially intended for a railway construction project connecting Darwin and Adelaide.
