City of Onkaparinga

The City of Onkaparinga is an administrative division on the southern edge of Adelaide that combines urban neighborhoods with rural areas. The region spans a large territory featuring diverse landscapes and settlement patterns.

The area was formed in 1997 through the merger of Happy Valley, Noarlunga, and Willunga councils. This consolidation created South Australia's largest local government organization.

The Onkaparinga River takes its name from the Kaurna word 'Ngangkiparinga', meaning 'women's river'. This indigenous heritage remains part of the area's local identity today.

The area has multiple main offices and service points spread across the region, with the primary location in Noarlunga Centre. Visitors can find services at various locations depending on which is most convenient to their destination.

The region is known for integrating three different historical communities, each maintaining its own community character. This diversity shapes the area's identity in distinctive ways today.
