Happy Valley Reservoir, Heritage-listed reservoir in South Australia, Australia

Happy Valley Reservoir is a drinking water storage facility in South Australia, located in a natural valley south of Adelaide and surrounded by bushland. It feeds the city's water supply and is ringed by a network of walking and cycling paths along its banks.

Construction of the reservoir began in 1892 and was completed in 1897 to meet Adelaide's growing demand for water. To flood the valley, the entire settlement of Happy Valley, including its cemetery, had to be moved to another location.

The reservoir sits between conservation parks, and visitors walking the edge paths can see native birds and wildlife drawn to the water throughout the day. The trails are used regularly by locals for walking and cycling, making the area feel like an everyday green space as much as a working facility.

Several entry points around the site make it easy to access on foot or by bike, and some sections of the path are suitable for people with limited mobility. Activities on the water, such as kayaking or fishing, require a permit obtained in advance.

The reservoir is listed on the South Australian Heritage Register partly because its dam structure is considered an early example of engineering in the region and remains visible today. Walking along the bank, you can see the original stonework of the dam up close.
