Hope Valley Reservoir, lake in Australia

Hope Valley Reservoir is a water storage facility in the northeastern part of Adelaide with walking and cycling paths around its edges and park areas. The system draws water from another reservoir through a tunnel to keep quality consistent.

The reservoir was built in 1873 and remains the oldest still operating in the city. It was created to supply water to Adelaide's growing population, and in the 1970s a treatment plant was added to improve water quality.

The name Hope Valley reflects the hope for a secure water supply for the growing city. Today, the place serves as a quiet spot where locals and visitors walk and experience the natural surroundings while connecting with the region's water heritage.

The dam wall is about 800 meters long and accessible to wheelchairs and strollers, with seating areas and information signs along the way. Shorter walking routes are about 2.3 kilometers, while the full loop is around 5.2 kilometers, with most paths on the western side.

Water is not drawn directly from local streams but diverted through a tunnel from another reservoir via Gorge Weir, a system that keeps quality more stable. This hidden infrastructure is key to how the city has secured its water supply for over a century.
