Old Adaminaby and Lake Eucumbene, Heritage site near Kosciuszko National Park, New South Wales, Australia
Old Adaminaby and Lake Eucumbene is a site where an earlier settlement was flooded to create a large reservoir. The remains of buildings, churches, and burial grounds become visible when water levels drop.
The Snowy Hydro Electric Authority built this reservoir between 1956 and 1958, deliberately flooding the original Adaminaby settlement. Local residents were relocated to higher ground to make way for the power generation project.
The Ngarigo people used this region as a seasonal gathering place for summer hunting activities across the Monaro territory. Their camps show how important this area was for coming together and sharing resources.
The lake is accessible year-round for fishing, boating, and camping along its shores. Multiple camping areas provide good bases for exploring the water and the surrounding landscape.
During drought periods, the water level drops significantly and reveals the actual remains of a lost community. Visitors can walk across the foundations of old structures when conditions allow it.
