Queensland University of Technology, Public university in Brisbane, Australia
Queensland University of Technology is a public university in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. The institution spans two locations: Gardens Point sits by the river near the business district, while Kelvin Grove lies further north in a residential area and includes sports facilities and media labs.
The roots of the university go back to the founding of the Brisbane School of Arts in 1849, which originally served as an evening school for tradespeople. In 1989, the institution received its current name and status as a university after decades as a technical college.
The riverside location brings together students from over a hundred countries who study in the library or rest on lawns between lectures. The campus connects learning with the daily life of the city, where pedestrians move through public pathways between university buildings and the city center.
Visitors can explore the public areas of the campus, including gardens and outdoor spaces, which are generally busiest on weekdays. Main entrances are located on George Street for Gardens Point and on Victoria Park Road for Kelvin Grove.
The Gardens Point campus stands on the grounds of the former Government House, whose sandstone foundations are still visible beneath some newer buildings. The QUT Art Museum displays its collection of contemporary Australian art free of charge, making it one of the few freely accessible university museums in the country.
