Waikoloa Village, Census-designated place on the western coast of Big Island, Hawaii.

Waikoloa Village is a residential community on the western coast of Big Island surrounded by dark volcanic rock and scattered vegetation. It contains neighborhoods, shopping areas, and several golf courses spread across the terrain.

Development began in the late 1970s on previously undeveloped volcanic land. This growth transformed an empty landscape into a modern residential area with planned infrastructure.

The place reflects how different communities live together in a resort-influenced setting while maintaining local Hawaiian connections. Daily life here blends vacation-style amenities with residential routines.

The area connects to other island locations through Hawaii Route 19 and has shopping centers, medical facilities, and schools nearby. The landscape offers little natural shade, so planning around sun exposure is helpful.

The area receives only about 11 inches of rain annually, making it far drier than typical for Hawaii. This extreme lack of rainfall creates an unexpected desert-like setting within a tropical island.
