Punta Mita is a peninsula on the Pacific coast in Nayarit state, stretching roughly 1500 acres into the ocean. Beaches with soft sand line three sides, broken up by rocky points and small coves that shelter calm water.
Before larger tourist developments were built in the 1990s, only a few fishing families lived in scattered settlements. The transformation began with early private construction projects that later led to a complete redesign of the area.
In the coastal communities, fishermen prepare small boats at dawn and haul handmade nets, while regional produce stacks up in markets near the villages. Families who have lived here for decades often gather in simple beach-side eateries where fresh seafood is grilled over wood fires using old recipes.
Access follows a paved road that starts roughly 26 miles from Puerto Vallarta airport and runs along the coast. Depending on the destination within the area, travel time ranges from 45 minutes to an hour.
Two golf courses designed by Jack Nicklaus offer holes at different elevations with views over the ocean. One of the holes sits on a small natural island that can only be reached at low tide via a narrow walkway.
