Cocula, Jalisco

Cocula is a municipality in Jalisco located at roughly 1,360 meters elevation, about 56 kilometers southwest of Guadalajara. The settlement spreads across plains and hillsides with a central core serving residents and visitors.

Spanish forces under Alonso de Ávalos conquered the original settlement of Cocollán in 1521, prompting relocation and the founding of present-day Cocula in 1532. This resettlement established the community that would become known for its musical heritage.

The mariachi tradition shapes daily life here, with musicians and instruments visible throughout the community. This heritage is woven into local identity and how residents celebrate important occasions.
