Guadalajara

Guadalajara is the capital of Jalisco in western Mexico, sitting at 1554 meters elevation in a valley. The city spreads across a wide area with broad boulevards, surrounded by mountains that frame the horizon.

Cristóbal de Oñate founded the city in 1542 after two earlier attempts at different locations had failed. This site proved permanent and became the center of the region.

Every September, mariachi musicians from different countries gather for a festival, performing in plazas and theaters throughout the city. Streets fill with people listening to traditional Mexican sounds and watching the performances unfold.

Miguel Hidalgo International Airport offers direct connections to roughly 50 destinations, while two metro lines run through the city. Public transport makes it easier to navigate between different neighborhoods and sights.

Inside Hospicio Cabañas, 57 frescoes by José Clemente Orozco cover the walls and ceilings, painted between 1937 and 1939. These works show scenes from Mexican history and social life of that time.
