Basilica of Our Lady of Zapopan, church building in Zapopan, Mexico de 45 metros de altura

The Basilica of Our Lady of Zapopan is a church built in the late 1600s that blends Plateresque and Baroque design, with tall vaults and colorful altarpieces inside. The facade features intricate stonework and three main sections, while housing a venerated wooden statue of the Virgin Mary from the 1500s.

Construction began in 1690 and was completed in the early 1700s after Franciscan friars arrived to spread the faith in the region. The original towers were later removed and replaced between 1889 and 1892 with new ones decorated with elaborate carved details.

The Virgin of Zapopan is called La Generala and has been honored by local people for generations. Visitors can see people praying and gathering in the church and plaza today, especially during festivals when the community comes together to celebrate their faith and traditions.

The basilica is located in downtown Zapopan and is easily reached by public transportation from Guadalajara, making it convenient to visit. Plan your visit outside festival periods if you prefer a quieter experience, as the church and surrounding area become crowded during celebrations.

Each year on October 12, the Romeria procession takes place, carrying a statue of the Virgin Mary from Guadalajara to Zapopan, a journey of about 9 kilometers that has continued since 1734. UNESCO has recognized this event as part of humanity's intangible cultural heritage.
