Long Beach Plaza, Shopping mall in Downtown Long Beach, California.
Long Beach Plaza was a two-level shopping mall in downtown Long Beach with a distinctive dumbbell-shaped design. The structure spanned eight city blocks and housed numerous retail stores along with dining options for shoppers.
The shopping center was developed in the late 1970s and opened in 1982 with major retailers including JC Penney and Montgomery Ward. The building eventually closed and was demolished in 2000 to make way for new urban development.
The mall operated as a central retail destination in Downtown Long Beach until its closure, reflecting the evolution of urban shopping centers in Southern California.
Access to the shopping center was available from both sides of the building through two-story parking structures connected directly to the interior. Visitors could park their vehicles and walk directly into the shopping areas.
The shopping center was designed to face inward, which meant stores were largely separated from the surrounding downtown streets. This isolation from the wider urban environment contributed to its eventual decline.
