Camarillo Airport, airport in California, United States of America
Camarillo Airport is an aerodrome in Ventura County, California, situated about 3 miles west of downtown Camarillo. The facility has a 6,000-foot (1,829 m) asphalt runway, two helipads, multiple hangars, and an FAA-operated control tower serving general aviation operations.
Built in 1942 as a small airstrip on farmland, the airport initially served military purposes during World War II. After the war it became Oxnard Air Force Base with extended runways and full military facilities, but was decommissioned in 1969 and transferred to Ventura County in 1976 for conversion to a civilian general aviation airport.
The airport draws aviation enthusiasts and pilots who gather here regularly to share their passion for flying. Local flying clubs and groups like the Experimental Aircraft Association keep the community active and engaged with aircraft restoration and recreational flying activities.
The airport is easily accessible from Highway 101 via several exits between Camarillo Springs Road and Central Avenue. Visitors can watch aircraft for free in outdoor viewing areas and attend events like the annual Wings Over Camarillo air show, typically held in August with historic aircraft and flying demonstrations.
The airport hosts the CAF Southern California Wing Museum, which displays restored World War II and vintage aircraft maintained and flown by volunteers during special events. This connection between preserved history and active flying operations makes it a living aviation museum rather than just a landing strip.
