Sunset Strip, Entertainment district in West Hollywood, US
The Sunset Strip runs for roughly one and a half miles along Sunset Boulevard between Crescent Heights Boulevard and Doheny Drive in western Los Angeles. The street is lined on both sides with restaurants, bars and concert halls interspersed with parking lots and building entrances.
This section of Sunset Boulevard began gaining importance in the 1920s as Hollywood developed into the film capital. By the 1960s the street had become the main spot for nightlife and rock music in the city.
The Comedy Store, Whisky a Go Go, and The Roxy Theatre maintain their status as primary entertainment venues, shaping Los Angeles comedy and music scenes.
Visitors reach the area by public bus or the free shuttle that runs between stops during the day. Metered parking spaces line the entire street section, though competition for spots is often heavy in the evening.
Record companies placed giant music album advertisements here in the 1960s that were as large as entire building facades. This style of advertising has remained a fixture of the street ever since.
