Mulholland Estates, Gated residential area in Beverly Hills, US
Mulholland Estates is a gated neighborhood in Beverly Hills that sits along the ridges of the Santa Monica Mountains with about 95 residential lots. The properties occupy hillside terrain covered with mature trees and native vegetation, with many homes positioned to overlook the Los Angeles basin and the canyons below.
Kenneth Kai Chang began planning the community in 1988, originally designing it as a condominium project before switching to a private residential layout for fewer than 100 families. The land was developed in phases while adapting to the natural contours of the mountain terrain.
The neighborhood maintains a selection of architectural designs, from modern structures to traditional California estates, reflecting diverse residential preferences.
Access is controlled at the Beverly Glen Boulevard and Mulholland Drive entrance, where security staff monitor entry to the neighborhood. Since 2011, Westpark Road has been open as a public route to Fossil Ridge Park, though parking along the route remains limited.
Westpark Road serves as a rare example of a public thoroughfare maintained within a private gated community in California. Hikers and cyclists use this access point to reach the trails of Fossil Ridge Park without opposition from the residents who agreed to the arrangement.
