The Proto-Cathedral of St. Mary is a Byzantine Ruthenian Catholic church on Sepulveda Boulevard in Sherman Oaks, the first Byzantine church in California. Its sanctuary is separated from the nave by a wrought iron grill screen with icons painted by local artist Mila Mina, installed in 1978.

The church was founded in 1956 as California's first Byzantine Catholic parish and formally dedicated in 1961 following land acquisition. This establishment marked the beginning of Eastern Christian presence in Southern California.

The church preserves Eastern Christian traditions of the Ruthenian Catholic community, expressed through Byzantine architectural details and the liturgical practices you observe during services. The painted icon screen is a visible reminder of this Eastern Christian identity.
