The college started operations in 1949 at Van Nuys High School before moving to its current location in 1951. This relocation allowed the school to expand and accommodate more students.
The student body comes from many different backgrounds and communities across the region. This diversity shapes how courses are taught and how students interact with one another on campus.
The campus is easily accessible by car or public transportation, with adequate parking for students and visitors. The grounds are well organized with clear pathways between buildings and different areas.
In 2016, the college experienced a major cyberattack in which hackers encrypted files and demanded payment in Bitcoin. This incident highlighted the growing digital security challenges faced by educational institutions.
