Oak Grove Butterfield Stage Station

The Oak Grove Butterfield Stage Station is a single-story adobe building nestled among California oak woodlands along State Route 79. The site features historical exhibits displaying period stagecoaches and horse carts that illustrate how the station operated in its working years.

Built in 1858, the station operated until 1861 as a critical stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail route linking San Francisco to Saint Louis and Memphis. Its brief period of operation coincided with major transitions in western mail delivery.

The station building served multiple purposes for the community during the Civil War era, including as a hospital for soldiers from the nearby Camp Wright. This reflects how such outposts functioned as important gathering points beyond their main role in transportation.

The station is located at mile marker 49.4 on State Highway 79, making it readily accessible to visitors exploring the site. The adobe structure and surrounding landscape provide context for understanding how this station functioned within the wider transportation network.

This structure remains the only preserved and operational building from the original network of Butterfield Overland Mail stations across the entire American West. Its survival makes it an extraordinarily valuable record of how mail routes functioned during that era.
