University of Redlands, Private university in Redlands, California.
The University of Redlands is a private institution in Redlands, California, spreading across roughly 65 hectares (160 acres) near the city center. The campus includes lecture halls, libraries, and sports facilities positioned at the edge of the mountains.
The institution opened in 1907 after the great San Francisco earthquake damaged other California schools. At first, 39 students attended classes in a local church before the current site was developed.
The campus takes its name from the surrounding city at the mountain base and now serves a growing number of Spanish-speaking students. Learners gather in more than eighty clubs across the grounds, engaging with arts, sports, and social issues.
The ratio between instructors and learners stands at 13:1, so courses usually allow room for questions. Many programs offer access to research projects, internships, and study abroad through partnerships with schools worldwide.
The Johnston Center for Integrative Studies allows learners to shape their own course focus and receive detailed written evaluations instead of grades. This approach gives participants greater freedom in choosing subjects and assessment methods.
