The Sonoran Desert National Monument spans three mountain ranges with extensive saguaro cactus forests across the most biologically varied desert in North America.
The Spanish colonial expedition led by Juan Bautista de Anza established a campsite in 1775 within the current boundaries of the monument.
The monument contains numerous archaeological sites and historic trails that document the presence of indigenous peoples and early European settlers in the region.
Visitors must bring their own drinking water and stay on designated routes, as summer temperatures frequently reach above 110 degrees Fahrenheit.
The monument receives rainfall in two distinct seasons, winter and late summer, creating conditions that support dense populations of saguaro cacti.
