Verde Hot Springs, Natural thermal pools in Yavapai County, United States.
Verde Hot Springs is a group of natural thermal springs along the Verde River in Yavapai County, Arizona. Geothermally heated, mineral-rich water fills several pools of different sizes set into the rocky riverbank.
A resort opened here in the 1920s and drew visitors from across the country who came for the thermal waters. A fire in the 1960s destroyed the main buildings, leaving behind only the concrete pools and foundations.
The springs sit deep in the Arizona desert and can only be reached on foot after crossing the river, which gives the place a different feel from typical bathing spots. Visitors soak in concrete basins that date back to the old resort, now filled with warm flowing water.
Getting to the springs requires a high-clearance vehicle for the dirt road to Child's Dispersed Camping Area and then a river crossing on foot. Conditions change with the seasons, and after heavy rain the crossing can be difficult or impossible.
The temperature varies noticeably from one pool to the next, so visitors can move between hotter and cooler water simply by changing basins. Some pools sit close enough to the river that when water levels rise, the Verde River flows directly into them and lowers the temperature.
