Fort Hancock is a small settlement situated along the US-Mexico border in far western Texas. The community sits along the Union Pacific Railroad line and is traversed by Texas State Highway 20.
The settlement began as Camp Rice in 1882 before being renamed in 1886 to honor General Winfield Scott Hancock. Its location at the international border shaped its development as a frontier community.
The Fort Hancock Independent School District maintains educational facilities, including Fort Hancock High School, which fields competitive six-man football teams.
An international bridge connects this location directly to Mexico for easy border crossing. Interstate 10 provides quick access to larger cities throughout Texas.
The community recorded a population increase to 1,052 residents in 2020, with 98.7 percent of inhabitants identifying as Hispanic or Latino.
