Nelson Reservoir, Lake in Apache County, Arizona
Nelson Reservoir is a long, narrow body of water in Arizona that stretches nearly a mile along Nutrioso Creek valley. The lake averages about 8 feet (2.4 m) deep and offers basic boat ramps for launching fishing boats and small watercraft from the shoreline.
The reservoir was constructed to manage water resources for local farms and communities in the region. Over time the fish populations have shifted, as native trout species disappeared and were replaced through regular stocking programs with rainbow trout.
The lake is easily accessible year-round since the paved road usually remains open, though snow may block the route south of Alpine. Visitors need to bring their own boats as rentals are not available, and motors up to 10 horsepower are permitted.
The water is regularly stocked with up to 20,000 rainbow trout, especially in spring after ice melts. In summer, algae blooms and weed growth can make fishing more difficult, particularly near the south end.
