Payne's Creek National Park

The park spans 37,680 acres of land containing broadleaf forests, mangrove regions, and wetlands along the lower reaches of Monkey River.

Archaeological excavations have uncovered over 4,000 wooden posts from Maya saltworks dating back to 300-900 AD beneath the waters of the park.

The area functioned as a major salt production center, where ancient Maya populations processed and preserved fish and meat for distribution to inland markets.

Access to the park requires boat transportation through Punta Ycacos Lagoon due to the high water table and numerous waterways throughout the reserve.

The park contains submerged Maya archaeological sites where wooden artifacts and structures remain preserved in the underwater environment.
