Sitio Conte

Sitio Conte is an archaeological burial site along the Rio Grande de Coclé river in Coclé Province, surrounded by grassland and low hills. The location contains multiple excavation areas with hundreds of graves where researchers discovered gold pieces, painted pottery, and personal objects.

The site served as a burial place for leaders and nobles of the Coclé culture between the 5th and 10th centuries. The graves are filled with precious objects that show how important these individuals were during that period.

The burial site displays ornaments and pottery that show how society was divided into different social classes within the Coclé civilization. Visitors can observe these items to understand how people valued rank and status through the objects buried with the dead.

The site is relatively open with marked excavation areas that let you see the different burial zones. Wear sturdy shoes since the ground is uneven and the weather here tends to be warm and humid.

Grave 26 stands out for its layered arrangement of twenty-two skeletons that reveals different burial practices among Coclé elites. This complex grave structure differs from typical burial patterns and provides insight into funeral rituals of the period.
