Amazon natural region, Natural region in southern Colombia.

The Colombian Amazon is a vast area of dense tropical forests and large river networks in the south of the country. It borders Peru and Brazil and remains one of the least populated parts of Colombia.

Numerous indigenous peoples have lived in the territory for thousands of years and have kept their languages and ways of life. During colonial times Europeans arrived, and later rubber barons and gold seekers pushed for change.

In small river towns and settlements, people speak different indigenous languages and keep traditional knowledge about the forest and its plants alive. Markets offer fish from the river, cassava and fruits that have been part of daily life for generations.

Travel inside the territory relies mainly on boats or small planes, as roads are rare and the forest allows few paved connections. Humidity is high and rain falls often, so light and quick drying clothing along with rain protection is essential.

Dolphins with pink skin swim in the larger rivers, especially the Putumayo and Caquetá, and sometimes surface beside passing boats. The animals are regarded by many river communities as special creatures with their own stories and myths.
