Granada

Granada is a municipality in Eastern Antioquia, Colombia, situated at high elevation in a mountainous region. The landscape features rolling hills covered in vegetation and experiences a humid highland climate throughout the year.

The area was discovered in the 16th century and initially fell under the administration of a neighboring jurisdiction. It later gained independence as its own parish and eventually developed into a separate municipality.

The municipality stands as the birthplace of Colombian cooperative movement through Francisco Luis Jiménez, who established fundamental principles of communal economic collaboration.

The area receives significant rainfall throughout the year, so visitors should bring waterproof clothing and sturdy footwear. Plan outdoor activities during drier periods when hiking and nature exploration are more comfortable.

Granada maintains a population density of 47 people per square kilometer, with 99.7 percent of residents representing mestizo and white ethnic backgrounds.
