Reserva natural Bajo Cauca-Nechí, Natural reserve in Antioquia, Colombia.
The Bajo Cauca-Nechí Natural Reserve is a large protected area stretching across four municipalities in northwestern Colombia, combining tropical forests with numerous rivers and waterways. The terrain varies from lower elevations to higher zones, creating different forest zones with dense canopy coverage and rich understory vegetation.
The reserve protects ancient forest formations that have existed for thousands of years, maintaining continuity from the ice ages to today. This long stability makes it a rare place where natural processes have continued with minimal human disruption.
Local communities have long depended on the forest for medicines and food, and many residents now work directly with conservation efforts to protect what their ancestors knew so well.
The easiest access routes begin from the towns of Anorí or Cáceres, both relatively close to the main administration area. Visitors should prepare for hot, humid weather and bring sturdy footwear, as trails can be muddy and require careful footing.
Large forest areas here remain completely unexplored, and they may harbor animal and plant species that science has never encountered. This unknown quality makes it one of the last true frontiers for biological discovery in South America.
