Mesa de los Santos, Mountainous plateau near Bucaramanga, Colombia
Mesa de los Santos is a highland plateau near Bucaramanga that sits at around 1700 meters elevation and features deep canyons and farmland across its surface. The terrain shows a mix of flat areas on top and steep slopes along the edges.
A German explorer established a hiking route of about 32 kilometers in 1860, connecting the village of Los Santos with what is now Panachi National Park. This early connection allowed more people to explore and settle the plateau.
The region maintains its connection to farming through the Mercado Campesino, where local farmers sell homemade corn and cheese arepas. Visitors can taste traditional dishes purchased directly from the producers.
Visitors reach the plateau by cable car from Panachi or by car from Bucaramanga, with the journey taking around 40 minutes by road. The best time to visit is during the drier months, when roads and hiking trails are in better condition.
The area experiences between 20 and 40 earthquakes daily, making it the location with the highest frequency of seismic activity in Colombia. Visitors may notice this unusual phenomenon while hiking through the region.
