El Tamá National Park, National park in Táchira and Apure states, Venezuela

El Tamá National Park is a protected area spanning two states in the Andes with mountain ridges, steep slopes, and deep valleys carved by rivers. The terrain climbs to significant elevations and supports different ecosystems ranging from lower valleys to high mountain peaks.

The park was established in the late 1970s to protect the water sources and natural areas of the southwestern Andes. Its creation marked official recognition of how critical this mountainous region is for water supply and the preservation of natural habitats.

The park area has always been home to people living in small communities scattered across the hillsides and valleys. Their connection to the land and water continues to shape how the region is experienced and valued today.

The best time to explore is during the drier season when trails are easier to navigate. Visitors should prepare for altitude, wear sturdy footwear, and use local guides to safely explore the terrain.

The area is home to many bird species living at different elevations that can be spotted across the mountains. Bird watchers and nature lovers discover species here that are found in few other places in the region.
