Ituango D, Hydroelectric power station in Antioquia Department, Colombia
Ituango D is an embankment dam and hydroelectric facility on the Cauca River in Antioquia, spanning 550 meters with a height of 225 meters. The facility contains eight turbines designed to generate power for much of the country.
Work began in 2011 with a planned completion in 2018, but geological challenges caused delays. Construction had to be adjusted several times after technical problems emerged.
The dam represents Colombia's largest energy infrastructure development, planned to supply 17 percent of the country's electrical power needs.
The project sits at coordinates 7.134444 and -75.661944 on the Cauca River in a remote mountainous region. Three diversion tunnels redirect river water during ongoing construction work.
Engineers placed 58 specialized micropiles in the underground section to stabilize critical components under extreme pressure. This technical solution became necessary because the bedrock was less stable than originally expected.
