Convensión, Municipality in Norte de Santander, Colombia.
Convención is a municipality in Norte de Santander situated in the mountainous northeastern region of Colombia at approximately 1,500 meters elevation. The terrain and climate conditions directly influence the types of crops that thrive in this area.
In 1530 the German explorer Ambrosio Alfinger reached this region and encountered indigenous Chitareros and Motilones peoples. The encounter ended with Alfinger's death in battle.
The name reflects a 1828 political convention that became important enough to rename the settlement, showing how national events shaped local identity.
The area depends on agriculture with coffee, sugar cane for panela production, plantains, and cacao as primary crops. Visitors should expect a rural setting with seasonal variations tied to farming cycles.
The original settlement consisted of 69 straw houses arranged around a central square with approximately 627 residents. This modest beginning reveals how communities took root in this mountainous terrain.
