Bugaba District, Administrative district in Chiriquí, Panama.
Bugaba District spans roughly 884 square kilometers across western Panama with Bocas del Toro Province bordering it to the north. The administrative hub of La Concepción connects thirteen corregimientos through roads that serve as the main routes for movement and commerce.
Franciscan missionaries founded La Purísima Concepción de Bugaba in 1794, marking the beginning of organized settlement in the area. The district was officially established through Law 6 in August 1863, creating the administrative framework that still exists today.
The population here brings together indigenous, Afro-Caribbean, and mestizo communities whose traditions show up in local celebrations. The Candelaria festival each February is a major event where people gather to honor their religious and cultural roots.
It is best explored by private vehicle or public bus since roads between the corregimientos are the main ways to get around. Visitors should be ready for rural driving conditions and expect road quality to vary depending on the season and location.
This area produces about 80 percent of the nation's food supply, revealing an extraordinary range of agricultural output. Rice and tobacco grow in the lowlands while vegetables thrive in the highland zones, showing how local farming adapts to different elevations and conditions.
