Serranía de Perijá, Mountain range between Colombia and Venezuela.
The Serranía de Perijá forms a continuous mountain range spanning 310 kilometers along the border between Colombia and Venezuela. The chain rises to varying elevations, with its highest point reaching around 3,600 meters.
The mountains remained largely cut off until the early 2000s due to armed conflict that lasted for decades in the region. Scientific expeditions and conservation work began only after conditions improved enough for safer exploration.
The communities living here have kept their own traditions and ways of living that shape how people use the land and settle on its slopes.
Visitors can reach this area from Valledupar, which serves as the main access point for exploration of the mountains. The drier months offer better conditions for trekking and observing wildlife across the slopes.
The mountains are home to species discovered only recently by scientists, such as the Perijá Tapaculo bird found a little over a decade ago. This discovery shows how much remains unknown about the wildlife living across these slopes.
