Angamuco

Angamuco is a pre-Columbian archaeological site in Michoacán containing the remains of a vast urban settlement. The landscape holds thousands of building foundations, agricultural terraces, roads, and other structures that show the scale and complexity of the ancient city.

The settlement originated around 900 CE and grew to become a major center of the Purépecha civilization. It expanded to rival or surpass other important cities in the region in terms of size and influence.

The arrangement of structures reveals how the Purépecha organized their urban spaces and which areas served different purposes. Visitors can observe how residential quarters, farming areas, and gathering places were connected.

The site is vast and can be challenging to navigate, so wear comfortable shoes and bring water. Visiting during drier months makes exploration easier, as the ground is firmer and vegetation less overgrown.

The site lay hidden beneath dense forest for over a thousand years until modern scanning technology revealed it in the early 2000s. This discovery allowed researchers to finally grasp the true scale of this ancient metropolis.
