Ing. Antonio M. Amor Refinery, Oil refinery in Salamanca, Mexico.
The Ing. Antonio M. Amor Refinery is an oil processing facility in Salamanca, Guanajuato, that converts crude oil into fuels and other products. The plant contains multiple processing units that handle different stages of crude oil conversion.
The refinery began operations on July 30, 1950, under President Miguel Aleman Valdes and was the first refinery built by Pemex, the national oil company. It marks Mexico's effort to develop its oil industry in the postwar period.
The facility is named after engineer Antonio M. Amor from Zacatecas, who directed Pemex's New Projects Department. His name reflects the early development of Mexico's oil industry by local experts.
The facility is located in an important industrial zone and processes crude oil into gasoline, diesel, and aviation fuel for the national market. Access to sensitive areas is restricted for security reasons, though visitors may be accommodated with advance arrangements.
In 1962 the facility added an ammonia plant to produce fertilizers for the agricultural regions of El Bajio. This expansion showed how the refinery diversified beyond basic oil processing.
