Templo del Santo Ángel Custodio de Analco, Baroque Catholic church in Analco district, Puebla, Mexico
The Templo del Santo Ángel Custodio de Analco is a Baroque church built with stone and mortar, featuring two towers that define the streetscape. Inside, a single nave opens up, while outside carved reliefs of archangels decorate the walls.
The building was constructed in 1619 on the site of an earlier chapel from 1560. In 1627, it gained parish status under Bishop Bernardo Gutiérrez de Quirós.
The name Analco comes from Nahuatl and means "other side of the river", reflecting the indigenous roots of this neighborhood. Walking through the area today, you can still sense how this historical background shapes the character of the place.
The church remains open for regular Catholic services and sits near a weekend artisan market in the Analco plaza. On weekends, the area becomes particularly active with opportunities to discover local craftwork.
During restoration work in 1999, workers discovered human remains, animal bones, and historical artifacts hidden inside the south tower. These unexpected finds offer insight into the deep history of the place before its transformation into a church.
