Coatepec Municipality, Administrative municipality in central Veracruz, Mexico
Coatepec Municipality is an administrative area in central Veracruz situated at about 1,200 meters (3,900 feet) elevation. The Pixquiac, Pintores, Sordo, and Hueyapan rivers flow through the region, supporting the communities that live there.
The name comes from the Nahuatl language, where coatl means serpent and tepetl means hill, reflecting ancient indigenous presence in the area. This naming preserved the memory of the pre-Hispanic people who lived here.
The municipality centers on the Feast of San Jerónimo on September 30, when residents gather for traditional music, local food, and community celebrations throughout the area. These events reflect the deep connection between the people and their land.
The higher elevation keeps temperatures moderate and fairly constant year-round, making it comfortable for visiting regardless of the season. Rain is frequent, so visitors should plan accordingly and expect green, well-watered terrain.
The area is known for growing high-quality coffee that benefits from the cool climate and fertile soil of the highland region. This coffee production shapes the local economy and landscape in ways visitors will notice.
